Ingredients:

For the Fish Fillets:

  • 4 white fish fillets (such as cod or haddock)
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (preferably panko for extra crunch)
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

For the Tartar Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp dill pickle relish
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp capers (finely chopped, optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For Assembly:

  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 4 slices of American cheese
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Fish:
    • Place the fish fillets in a bowl and cover them with buttermilk. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes to tenderize and flavor the fish.
  2. Coat the Fish:
    • In a shallow dish, combine flour, breadcrumbs, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
    • Remove each fillet from the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off, then coat evenly with the flour mixture. Press the coating onto the fillets to ensure it sticks.
  3. Fry the Fish:
    • Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. There should be enough oil to cover the bottom of the pan and come halfway up the sides of the fillets.
    • Fry the coated fish fillets for 3-4 minutes per side or until they are golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  4. Make the Tartar Sauce:
    • In a small bowl, mix together mayonnaise, dill pickle relish, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, and capers if using. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Assemble the Sandwiches:
    • Toast the hamburger buns if desired. Spread a generous layer of tartar sauce on the bottom half of each bun.
    • Place a slice of cheese on top of the tartar sauce, followed by a fried fish fillet.
    • Top with shredded lettuce and the other half of the bun.
  6. Serve and Enjoy:
    • Serve the sandwiches immediately while the fish is still hot and crispy. Enjoy your homemade twist on a fast-food favorite!

Tips:

  • For extra crunch, try double coating the fish fillets by dipping them back in the buttermilk and then the flour mixture again before frying.
  • Customize your sandwich with additional toppings like tomato slices or pickles for added flavor.
