Grilled Tomahawk Steak Recipe

Servings: 2-4
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 15-20 minutes
Rest Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 40 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tomahawk steak (about 2-3 pounds)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons coarse sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 sprigs fresh rosemary
  • 4 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (optional for basting)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the grill.
Heat your grill to high, around 450-500°F (230-260°C). This will give the steak a perfect sear while keeping it juicy inside.
  2. Season the steak.
Rub the Tomahawk steak all over with olive oil. Season generously with sea salt, black pepper, and smoked paprika (if using). Press the crushed garlic and rosemary sprigs into the steak for an extra layer of flavor.
  3. Grill the steak.
Place the Tomahawk steak directly onto the hot grill grates. Sear for 3-4 minutes on each side to develop a golden crust. After the sear, reduce the heat to medium or move the steak to an indirect heat zone for even cooking.
  4. Monitor internal temperature.
Using a meat thermometer, check the internal temperature of the steak:

    • For rare: 120-125°F (49-52°C)
    • For medium-rare: 130-135°F (54-57°C)
    • For medium: 140-145°F (60-63°C)

Continue grilling until your desired doneness is reached.

  5. Rest the steak.
Once cooked, transfer the Tomahawk steak to a cutting board. Tent loosely with foil and let it rest for 10 minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute, ensuring a tender, flavorful steak.
  6. Optional: Baste with butter.
While the steak rests, melt a tablespoon of butter in a small pan and brush it over the top for extra richness.
  7. Slice and serve.
Carve the steak away from the bone, then slice against the grain into thick, juicy pieces. Serve immediately, pairing it with your favorite sides or sauces.

This Grilled Tomahawk Steak is a show-stopping dish that’s surprisingly simple to prepare. Perfect for special occasions or when you want to impress your guests!
